Here are my 2 cents; When it comes to establishing a web presence, commit to deliver quality content on a schedule and stay consistent! You'll grow your community and traffic if people expect good stuff from your website and you actually deliver it. Social networking sites are great as long as, like you said, you do it the right way. However, I would advise against joining too many. I typically tell my clients to pick 3 that you can commit to updating and engaging in. If you start a profile on too many, you're really creating "ghost accounts." When people try to interact with you they'll be left in the cold because you don't keep it up like you should.
